Transitions are at the core of what I do. I work as a transition maker at Squarewise, a transition bureau that helps to accelerate sustainable transitions - and navigate the complex social issues that come with it. As a freelancer I mainly take on organisational or team development projects; transitions that are different in nature and scale, but where change is the only constant nonetheless.

I approach my work with cultural sensitivity and an open mind. Whether it's facilitating, moderating, sparking innovative ideas, or curating impactful programs, I ensure a collaborative environment and create inclusive spaces. Find more info on my projects below.

World Press Photo

The World Press Photo Foundation hosted its annual festival online for the first time ever. I curated an engaging, dynamic online programme that is interesting to both the visual storytelling industry as well as the general public. The three day program included a digital forum with an awards show, presentations and dialogue.

Message in a Photo

Setting up the new grantees programme, I guided six photographers in their professional and personal development. Every month, I organised and facilitated two meetings for them to set goals, train new skills, monitor progress and deliver a well-rounded project by the end of February 2021.

European Press Prize

As project lead, I gave substance to partnerships, building fresh collaborations from scratch or maintaining existing ones. In addition, I organised the annual European Press Prize event, with a day programme and award ceremony. In 2020 and 2021, the event was online.

Young Urban Achievers

As project coordinator for this project I supported young entrepreneurs in setting up their own cultural enterprise in Ramallah (Palestine), working demand driven. I acted based on the needs of the local team, providing them with support regarding their business plan, market research and fundraising.

Dutch Journalism Fund

As part of the Dutch Journalism Fund think-tank I researched current issues in journalism and worked to create innovative solutions to these issues, while simultaneously working on my personal development through practice and training.

Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Turkish father, my parents gave me two names that reflected my mixed background - and should both be pronounceable by people in both countries. Thus my name is Vera Aylin, but I go by Aylin in daily life.

I graduated in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam with a major in International Relations, specialising in the Middle East. One year after I got my Bachelor’s degree, I started a Master’s programme in Middle Eastern Studies at the same university, but decided to quit that programme a year later, without having obtained a degree. Although the subject matter still interests me (and that is an understatement), the academic environment was not the right fit.

I thrive in a free and independent environment, where there is room to improvise and approach things differently than ‘normal’. I owe a lot to many other things than university: my ten years in the hospitality industry; self-reflection; my first internship-turned-grownup-job and binge-watching large numbers of tv series.

I am an independent worker, diligent, have a knack for quality (in every aspect of life), eye for detail, and a curious and analytical mind. And above all: I am never done learning. Over the years I have developed knowledge and skills I never thought I would: from video and audio editing to online facilitation; from organisational development to group dynamics. I use many of these things on a day-to-day basis and constantly reflect and improve on them.

Board member Young Urban Achievers Foundation

“Aylin was a project coordinator for the YUA Foundation and we couldn’t have been happier to have her on board. She was able to create much needed structure and vision in the project. She has a very bright mind and is always in control of the situation, which puts everyone at ease, from her team members to the project participants. I would work with her again in a heartbeat!”

Thomas van Neerbos

Director of the European Press Prize

“Quality is at the heart of what we try to find and award at the Press Prize, true quality is also exactly what Aylin brings to every project she is involved in. Quality you can see, feel and recognise, quality you can sell, and build on. From grand ceremonies to online events, from building our own team with authentic experiences and honest interactions to building our international community with strategic partnerships and long lasting relationships - always built on the mutual values and goals Aylin finds and combines.”

Diane van der Marel

Founder MIAP Foundatio

“Aylin set up a new development program for visual artists to help their projects come to life. She is good at both facilitating a very collaborative workspace, as at inspiring artists with new tools and platforms where their stories can grow. I have gotten to know Aylin as a very nice, intelligent, collaborative person. She has an ease and calm about her when facilitating group processes. By giving space and listening carefully she encourages people to strengthen their ideas. She can work independently and structured and has a nice sense of humor. I would highly recommend her and hope we can work together in the future. ”
